Nutritionist and founder Stuart Roberts provides answers to the questions we frequently hear from existing and potential customers in a refreshingly honest way.
How much do I need to drink? One bottle will provide you with your antioxidant requirements for the day. You can however drink more than this, AOk is a great tasting drink for any occasion.
Can I dilute it?Yes, it can be diluted but you would need to drink a whole bottle that has been diluted to get the full antioxidant benefit.
Is there any added sugar? No, the only sugar in the drink is the naturally occurring sugar found in the fruit.
I am diabetic, can I drink it?The antioxidant benefit can be enjoyed if you are diabetic but it is advisable to dilute it and drink at meal times to ensure blood sugar is not disrupted. If in doubt consult your GP.
Is it best to drink it all in one go or drink it throughout the day? Either way is fine, it is really down to individual preference.
What are free radicals? It is now widely known that free radicals are bad for you. But few people actually realise how completely they dictate our health and accelerate the aging process.
Free radicals are highly active and dangerous chemical groups that are unfortunately, unavoidable; every breath we take creates free radicals from chemical residues of oxygen used by our bodies. This means that the very air we breathe to stay alive creates harmful by-products that can contribute towards ageing and disease.
Free radicals are everywhere. No matter where we live and how careful we are, there is no way that we can avoid free radicals. They come from a diverse range of sources:
Environmental Pollutants:
Vehicle exhausts, pesticides, herbicides, industry chemicals or chlorine when swimming.
Lifestyle:
Stress, poor diet, burnt carbonised food, smoking, alcohol, mobile phones, watching TV, Computer screens, exercise (especially intensive exercise)
Ultra Violet Radiation:
Excessive exposure to sunlight or tanning booths
Metabolism:
Normal cellular function e.g. the manufacture of proteins.
Pathogens:
Certain viruses
Free radicals are constantly produced continually attack every tissue in the body. If we become overwhelmed by their numbers and do not have sufficient antioxidants to limit this damage we are more prone to developing medical conditions and will definitely age faster. This aging does not just happen internally but shows in the condition of the skin. One of the most reactive free radicals is a Hydroxyl Radical. These are horribly active and attack almost every molecule in the body.
Excessive radiation from the sun causes the production of these free radicals in the water molecules of the skin and they set about breaking down the collagen, making the skin less elastic thus producing wrinkles and other signs of aging. Ensuring that you get a good amount of antioxidants from your diet is essential in keeping these free radicals under control. Lots of multi coloured fruit and vegetables is a great way to do it but another good way is from the juices of these foods.
AOk contains a combination of Cherry juice, Aloe Vera juice, Ginger juice and Red Grape Juice. Each is a powerful antioxidant in its own right and in combination they provide an exceptionally powerful antioxidant drink that will provide the daily boost your body needs to keep you looking younger for longer.
What is an antioxidant?Antioxidant is the collective name for certain substances that protect the body from harmful free radicals. For example, some of the most well known antioxidants include the vitamins A (found in liver, dairy, and fish), C (found in bell peppers and citrus fruits), E (found in oils, fortified cereals, seeds, and nuts), and the mineral selenium (found in Brazil nuts, meats, tuna, and plant foods).
The carotenoids beta-carotene, lutein, and lycopene also have high antioxidant activity and are responsible for adding colour to many fruits and vegetables. Carrots and pumpkins wouldn't be orange without beta-carotene, for example. Lutein, also important in eyesight, is abundant in leafy green vegetables. Lycopene is present in red fruits and vegetables, most notably in tomatoes. No wonder so many nutrition experts stress the importance of eating a "colourful" diet!
While you should ensure your diet is rich in antioxidants, busy lifestyles can prevent us from obtaining optimal amounts. AOk is a convenient way of supplementing your daily antioxidant intake. One 250ml bottle provides your daily antioxidant needs.
Why are they called antioxidants? The name is simply derived from a process called oxidation, this process enables our cells to use oxygen and create energy from our diet. A portion of this process is called uncontrolled oxidation and is the largest single cause of degeneration known to science. It cannot be avoided and occurs everywhere in nature.
Have you ever wondered why a cut apple browns, meat rots or steel rusts when exposed to the elements? These are all examples of oxidation in the environment and it is this same process that causes damage in the cells of our bodies, becoming a primary cause of pain, inflammation, disease and ageing. Antioxidants, however, stop the oxidation chain-reaction by giving up or receiving electrons and neutralising free radicals so that they cannot induce any more oxidative damage; they are ANTI oxidation substances (ANTIOXIDANTS)
What does an antioxidant do?
Antioxidants enable the body to defend itself. It's the job of antioxidants to neutralise or mop up free radicals that can harm our cells.
Evolution has given the body the ability to produce endogenous antioxidants but this is influenced by our exposure to environmental factors such as diet, stress, sunlight, pollution and smoking.
Changes in our lifestyles, which include more environmental pollution and less good quality, natural produce in our diets, mean that we are exposed to more free radicals than ever before.
Scientists have estimated that every cell in the body suffers 10,000 free radical “hits” each day. Over a 70-year life span, we can experience up to 17 tonnes of free radicals.
How many antioxidants do I need each day?Just like having our ‘5 a day’ servings of fruit and vegetables, we must also consider the amount of antioxidants we’re consuming. Antioxidants are often measured in terms of their ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbency Capacity) units.
Recent research on some of the longest living groups of people in the world indicates that they achieve between 3000 and 6000 ORAC units per day from their diet. It is therefore recommended that we try to get at least 3000 units per day.
One 250ml bottle of AOk gives you 3600 units in a convenient and delicious drink.
What can happen if I am exposed to excessive amounts of free radicals? If free radicals build up they can, over time, predispose us to inflammation, illness and disease as well as premature ageing.
Why is AOk so packed with antioxidants?Stuart Roberts’ approach to nutritional medicine is to look at the whole body as well as causes and effects. He used this approach when creating AOk.
AOk has been developed using the synergy of antioxidant-rich ingredients that have been carefully selected for their individual properties. The combination of these powerful antioxidant substances in test results showed very high antioxidant activity in the drink compared to published data of other juices such as orange juice.
This makes AOk a fantastic everyday antioxidant drink; ideal for health conscious consumers who want a convenient and delicious way to obtain essential antioxidants without having to make dramatic changes to their lifestyle or eating habits.
What's in a bottle of AOk?Each bottle of AOk contains just four natural ingredients, Red Grapes, Tart Cherries, Aloe Vera and Ginger, which have been carefully chosen for their individual and synergistic nutritional properties. It is the synergy of these ingredients that produce excellent antioxidant results.
